Understanding Financial Markets

Investment Management,

In this course, you will learn what the main financial markets and their characteristics are as well as how they are linked to the economy. Our very diversified team of experts will start by teaching you how the price of stocks and bonds are computed and why they move while you will become increasingly aware of the notion of risk and why it matters when measuring an investment's performance. The focus will then move to less popular markets such as gold, emerging markets, real estate, hedge funds and private markets. These will be analyzed with an emphasis on their particular risks and return opportunities as well as how they can help in building efficient portfolios. Finally, the policies of central banks and their impact on financial markets will be presented to you along with the link between the economy and the price of financial assets. All along these different steps, experts from UBS, our corporate partner, will show you how the concepts you just acquired are effectively applied in a leading global bank. This focus on practicality means you will not only understand what is going on in global financial markets but also start to figure out how you can use them to achieve financial goals, be it a client's or your own. Course Director and main teaching contributor: Dr. Michel Girardin, Lecturer in Macro-Finance, University of Geneva

So thank you COURSERA team for giving me chance to learn by University Of Geneva's professor.

ME GUSTO MUCHO EL ABORDAJE DE TEMAS An excellent overview of the key assets that can be invested in on global financial markets and a thorough grounding in macro-finance from the teaching team at University of Geneva.

But my opinion might be biased, as I am currently studying Economics at the University of Geneva, and therefore Dr. Girardin Is my teacher every week! It's strange to see your teacher face to face Monday morning, and later on your computer when studying! Can't wait to complete the next ones!

I liked an earlier course by the University of Geneva (International Organization Management) - which I completed with distinction.

Thanks a lot to the University of Geneva and to Coursera.

also, the lectures from the University of Geneva Professors are very straightforward, in plain English.

Thanks the University of Geneva, UBS and Coursera teams for putting this course together!

Thank you Amazing Course by University of Geneva.

other courses

The course offered a good repetition of some major concepts and from time to time I also gained some new insights. For 4 weeks only, however, 70 EUR is rather expensive compared to some other courses offered by Coursera.

Some other courses lack explanations.

I feel like a learned a lot, and can't wait to complete the other courses for this specialization.

There are similar or even better content available in other courses which are truly open and that request for payment if the student wish to get the certificate.

Lays a strong foundation for the other courses in the specialization.

interest rates

Background knowledge of topics is useful in understanding issues such as inflation and interest rates.

A little too theoretical and the subjects are not easy to follow. It should have more step by step and deep explanation (math stuff). The interest rates vs bonds are difficult for begginers, it should be transmitted in different ways.

It would be nice if the lecturer could present some numeric examples of the impact of prices with the change of interest rates considering the duration of the portfolio.

equities, interest rates and inflation.
