Oral medicine is referred to as a discipline of dentistry which is focused on the care of oral health. It is concerned with the diagnosis and management of various medical problems that affect the orofacial region. It is focused on the treatment of oral mucosal abnormalities, including temporomandibular disorders, salivary gland disorders and oral cancer. It is also concerned with the diagnosis and management of facial pain occurring due to neurologic or musculoskeletal conditions, and smell and taste disorders, along with the identification of various infectious and systematic diseases. Oral medicine is a non-surgical specialty, which includes procedures like therapeutic injections, small excisions, diagnostic biopsies, along with other minor surgical interventions. It also manages the oral and dental problems of cancer patients who have oral mucositis, oral pathology associated with radiation therapy, and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. Various conditions that are managed by oral medicine include pemphigus vulgaris, Behçet's disease and lichen planus. This book provides comprehensive insights on clinical oral medicine.
