Argues that an "integrative" approach one combining the either/or-type approaches of narrative vs. analysis, personal vs. academic language, data vs. theory, and teacher vs. student perspectives provides the strongest model for teacher-researchers. Fishman (philosophy, U. of North Carolina) and McCarthy (composition and literature, U. of Maryland) present a survey of developments in teacher research from the late seventies to the present, and then examine the processes behind four of their previously published studies, here reprinted. While unplayed tapes of private conversations show the authors disagreeing, these conflicts are transformed into arguments for lessening the either/or dualisms plaguing research and preventing integration.
