这是一部评述1845-1945年百年史学发展的专著，全书分为三部分，上编写近百年中国史学的前期，到经今文学运动兴起为止。中编写中国近百年的中期，主要记录了20世纪前30年的新史料发掘工作。下编写近百年中国史学的后期，主要记录了各专门史的研究进展、通史及断代史的撰述、对甲骨文和金文的研究、蒙古史元史和中外交通史的研究、俗文学史与美术史的研究以及古史辨运动和上古史研究。书的篇幅不大，却结构清晰，文字畅达，立意高远，信息密集，被认为是中国近代史学史领域的一本名著。
