Quando Alberto Moravia cominciò a scrivere questo capolavoro, nel 1925, non aveva ancora compiuto diciott'anni. Intorno a lui l'ltalia, alla quale Mussolini aveva imposto la dittatura, stava dimenticando lo scoppio d'indignazione e di ribellione suscitato nel 1924 dal delitto Matteotti e scivolava verso il consenso e i plebisciti per il fascismo. Il giovane Moravia non si interessava di politica, ma il ritratto che fece di un ventenne di allora coinvolto nello sfacelo di una famiglia borghese e dell'intero Paese doveva restare memorabile. Il fascismo eleva l'insidia moderna dell'indifferenza a condizione esistenziale assoluta.
