The two have just arrived from Columbus, Ohio, determined to forge a life in New York City as a writer and an actress respectively. Based upon the play "My Sister Eileen" by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov and the stories by Ruth McKenney (first published in The New Yorker in the late 1930s).

The original run of Wonderful Town, starred Rosalind Russell and premiered on Broadway in 1953, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
