《本草纲目》内容丰富，知识广博，不仅对古代人民的医疗、保健有很大的影响，对现代人认识和了解药物，加强养生保健也有重要的指导作用。为此，我们从《本草纲目》中精选常见疾病治疗药方五十余种，常用药物两百余种，以期对读者有所帮助。我们在编选时坚持以下几个原则：一是通俗易懂。《本草纲目》虽是古代的药物学*作，但总体上来说比较好懂，为了便于广大读者阅读和理解，我们尽量编选其中的精华和好懂的部分。二是尽量保持原貌。《本草纲目》是作者在长期实践中得来的，大部分经得起历史的检验，因此我们尽量保持该书的原貌，不断章取义，不损害原书的价值。三是经济实用。我们所选的力求是常见的药物、药材，能够让读者方便取用。
