A Public Health Social Worker is a social worker who works in the field of public health. Public Health Social Workers help individuals, families, and communities to improve their health and well-being. They work with people who are facing health challenges, such as chronic diseases, mental illness, and substance abuse. Public Health Social Workers also work to prevent health problems from occurring by promoting healthy behaviors and educating people about health risks.

Responsibilities of Public Health Workers

Public Health Social Workers have a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Providing counseling and support to individuals and families
  • Developing and implementing health education programs
  • Advocating for policies that improve public health
  • Conducting research on health-related issues
  • Working with other professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care to patients

Education and Training

Public Health Social Workers typically need a master's degree in social work (MSW) from an accredited program. Some employers may also require a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) or a related field, such as public health.

In addition to their formal education, Public Health Social Workers must also complete a period of supervised experience, which typically lasts for two years.
