Skills and Knowledge

If you want to pursue a career as an art historian, you will likely need the following skills and knowledge:

  • Strong art history and criticism skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to conduct research and analysis
  • Knowledge of foreign languages
  • Familiarity with digital databases and research tools

Education and Training

To become an art historian, you typically need a master's or doctoral degree in art history. Some employers may also accept candidates with a bachelor's degree in art history who have relevant experience.

Art history programs typically include coursework in art history, art theory, and criticism, as well as research methods and writing. Students may also take courses in foreign languages, history, and other related fields.

In addition to formal education, many art historians gain experience through internships or fellowships at museums, galleries, or other cultural institutions.

Career Growth

Art historians may advance to positions such as curator, museum director, or university professor. With additional education and experience, they may also become art critics or art consultants.
