Psychologists are professionals who study the mind and behavior. They use their knowledge to help people understand themselves and others, and to improve their mental health and well-being. Psychologists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, and businesses. They may also work as researchers or teachers.
Educational Requirements
Most psychologists have a doctorate in psychology (PhD) or a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). These programs typically take 5-7 years to complete and include coursework in psychology, research methods, and clinical practice. Some psychologists also complete a postdoctoral fellowship, which provides additional training in a specialized area of psychology.
Skills and Knowledge
Psychologists need a strong understanding of human behavior and mental health. They also need to be able to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and other professionals. Other important skills for psychologists include:
