The Network Operations Technician is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting computer networks and related infrastructure. In this role, you will use network monitoring tools to diagnose and fix network issues, install and configure network devices, and monitor network traffic for suspicious activity. To be successful in this role, you need to have a strong understanding of networking concepts and protocols, network security, IP addressing, and troubleshooting techniques. Although some Network Operations Technicians may have a formal degree or diploma in networking, this is not always the case. However, most will have taken courses in these areas and will have earned certifications, such as the CompTIA Network+, to demonstrate their competency.

Day-to-Day of a Network Operations Technician

The day-to-day of a Network Operations Technician can vary depending on the size and complexity of the network that they are responsible for. However, some of the common tasks that you may perform on a daily basis include:

  • Monitoring network traffic for suspicious activity
  • Troubleshooting and resolving network issues
  • Installing and configuring network devices
  • Maintaining and updating network documentation
  • Working with other IT professionals to ensure that the network is running smoothly
