Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Golf course maintenance technicians perform a variety of tasks that support the overall upkeep and appearance of golf courses. They may be responsible for:

  • Mowing and trimming grass;
  • Watering and fertilizing turf;
  • Controlling weeds, pests, and diseases;
  • Repairing and replacing divots and bunkers;
  • Maintaining irrigation systems;
  • Operating tractors, mowers, and other equipment;
  • Inspecting and cleaning golf carts and other vehicles;
  • Assisting with special events and tournaments.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Golf course maintenance technicians should have a strong understanding of turfgrass science and management practices. They should also have knowledge of equipment maintenance and operation, and be familiar with the use of pesticides and herbicides.

Additional essential skills include:

  • Physical fitness and endurance;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Problem-solving abilities;
  • Ability to follow instructions;
  • Teamwork skills.

Education and Training

Most golf course maintenance technicians learn their skills through on-the-job training. However, there are also a number of colleges and universities that offer associate degrees or certificates in golf course management. These programs typically provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the field.

Some golf course maintenance technicians may also choose to obtain professional certification through organizations such as the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).
