Traffic Safety Engineer
Traffic safety engineers work to improve the safety of roadways and reduce the number of traffic accidents. They design and implement traffic control devices, such as stop signs and traffic lights, and they develop strategies to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. Traffic safety engineers also investigate traffic accidents and collect data on traffic patterns to identify areas where improvements can be made.
Day-to-day
Traffic safety engineers typically work in an office setting, but they may also spend time in the field investigating traffic accidents or conducting traffic studies. They use a variety of tools and equipment, including computer software, traffic simulation models, and data analysis tools.
Skills
Traffic safety engineers need to have a strong understanding of traffic engineering principles and practices. They also need to be able to collect and analyze data, and to develop and implement solutions to traffic safety problems. Other skills that are important for traffic safety engineers include:
- Communication skills
- Problem-solving skills
- Project management skills
- Attention to detail
- Analytical skills
