  • Planning and implementing age-appropriate activities and lesson plans
  • Guiding and nurturing children to ensure their emotional, physical, intellectual, and social growth and development
  • Communicating with children's parents or guardians about their children's progress and development
  • Observing and assessing children's behavior and progress
  • Identifying children who have special needs and referring them for further evaluation and support
  • Maintaining a safe, healthy and nurturing and stimulating environment for children
  • Working closely with other staff members to create a positive team environment
  • Ensuring that all staff members are trained and certified in applicable areas
  • Establishing and maintaining policies related to the operation of the childcare facility
  • Enrolling new children and families into the program
  • Collecting and processing tuition and other fees
  • Maintaining financial records and preparing budgets
  • Ordering supplies and equipment
  • Marketing and promoting the childcare program
  • Representing the childcare facility at community events
  • Maintaining relationships with local schools and other community organizations
  • Keeping up to date on current trends and research in early childhood education

Advancement Opportunities for Childcare Directors

With experience, a Childcare Director may advance to a position as a Program Director or Executive Director of a larger childcare centre, or open their own preschool or childcare business.

Skills and Knowledge

In order to be successful as a Childcare Director, individuals must have knowledge of child development and early childhood education, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They must also be highly organized and have a strong attention to detail. 

 Following is a list of additional skills that may be helpful to have:

  • Experience in early childhood education
  • Leadership skills
  • Management skills
  • Business skills
  • CPR and first aid certification
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Positive attitude and a love of children

Education and Training

Most Childcare Directors have at least an associate's degree in early childhood education or a related field, though some employers may hire candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent who have extensive experience in the field. 

Certifications in CPR and first aid are often required and some directors pursue additional certifications in childcare management or administration.

Job Outlook

 The job outlook for Childcare Directors is expected to be good as the demand for childcare services continues to grow. 

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of childcare workers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.
