Oncology Pharmacist
Oncology Pharmacists are specialty pharmacists who care for patients with cancer. They work with a patient’s oncologist to develop and manage a patient’s medication plan, which may include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and other medications. Oncology Pharmacists also provide education and counseling to patients and their families about their medications and their cancer treatment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Oncology Pharmacists have a variety of duties and responsibilities, including:
- Developing and managing medication plans for patients with cancer
- Educating and counseling patients and their families about their medications and their cancer treatment
- Monitoring patients’ progress and making adjustments to their medication plans as needed
- Working with a patient’s oncologist to develop and implement a treatment plan
- Participating in clinical trials and research studies
- Providing support and counseling to patients and their families
Education and Training
Oncology Pharmacists must have a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an accredited pharmacy school. They must also complete a residency in oncology pharmacy. Oncology Pharmacists must be licensed by the state in which they practice.
Skills and Knowledge
Oncology Pharmacists must have a strong understanding of pharmacology, oncology, and patient care. They must also have excellent communication and counseling skills. Oncology Pharmacists must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
