April 13, 2024 4 minute read

Picture framers prepare, cut, and finish the frames and mats around various pictures, print, mirrors, and other artwork. Those who matte and frame pictures must have a good eye for detail and proportion to prepare the right sized mat and frame to bring out the unique qualities of a picture.

History

The history of picture framing can be traced back to the Renaissance period when artists began to use frames to protect their paintings from the elements. Frames were also used to enhance the beauty of the paintings and to make them more valuable. In the 17th century, picture framing became a trade in its own right, and picture framers began to create custom frames for their clients.
