Swimming Pool Service Technicians, employed by companies, municipalities, or private clients, are often responsible for the overall upkeep, regular maintenance, and occasional repairs of pools and surrounding areas such as decks and fencing. They can work for companies handling a mixture of commercial and residential clients or work more specifically at public facilities like aquatic centers, waterparks, or resorts. With the right training, including online courses, a person may prepare themselves for this rewarding role.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Some day-to-day activities of a Swimming Pool Service Technician may include, but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning, repairing, and maintaining swimming pools, spas, and related equipment such as pumps, filters, and heaters
  • Inspecting pool equipment to ensure they are functioning properly and safely
  • Balancing and monitoring pool chemistry and chemical treatment to ensure it aligns with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Maintaining appropriate water levels and circulation in the pool
  • Testing water quality and adjusting chemical levels to ensure the pool is safe for swimmers
  • Troubleshooting and repairing pool equipment as necessary
  • Opening and closing pools for the season, including winterizing and de-winterizing
  • Providing excellent customer service to clients

Necessary Skills and Experience

Most positions in this role will require experience working with pools, chemical treatment, equipment maintenance, and customer service. These skills may be gained through online courses, prior experience in a similar role, or through self-guided learning.
