A Drone Mapping Technician maps land and structures using drones and specialized software. Using a variety of imaging and data collection techniques, Drone Mapping Technicians create 2D maps, 3D models, and other data sets such as orthomosaics, point clouds, and digital surface models (DSMs). Drone Mapping Technicians set up and operate drones, sensors, and associated software to collect, analyze, and interpret data for a variety of purposes, including surveying, construction, mining, and environmental monitoring.

Job duties for a Drone Mapping Technician may include the following:
- Set up and calibrate drone equipment, including drones, sensors, and software.
- Plan and execute drone flight missions to collect data for mapping and modeling.
- Process and analyze data using specialized software to create 2D maps, 3D models, and other data sets.
- Interpret data to identify features, patterns, and trends.
- Create reports and presentations to communicate findings to clients.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest drone technology and data collection techniques.

Education and Training for Drone Mapping Technicians
Most Drone Mapping Technicians have a bachelor's degree in a related field, such as surveying, geography, or engineering. Some employers may also accept applicants with an associate's degree or a high school diploma and relevant experience. In addition to formal education, Drone Mapping Technicians typically need to have experience with drone operation, data collection, and software analysis. Many Drone Mapping Technicians also have a certification from the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
