Who is a Foresight Analyst?
A foresight analyst is someone who uses research methods and technologies to examine large-scale trends. They interpret their findings to help businesses and organizations envision and make decisions about the future. Some of the questions foresight analysts answer include:
- What are the biggest trends in my industry and how can we use them to build our future plans?
- How will a new technology affect our business?
- What changes should we make now to succeed in an uncertain future?
Foresight analysts often work in think tanks, government agencies, and large companies. Some work as consultants for many different clients at once. Regardless of their area of employment, foresight analysts are expected to think deeply about long-term trends, generate detailed reports, and make persuasive presentations to stakeholders.
How to Become a Foresight Analyst
Most foresight analysts hold a master's degree in foresight, futures studies, strategic foresight, or a similar field, though many come to this career from other backgrounds, such as business, economics, or public policy, with strong analytical and research skills.
Some foresight analysts get their start working as a researcher or analyst for a think tank or government agency. Others work in a related field and gradually assume more responsibility for foresight work. Many foresight analysts are skilled in using specialized foresight research methods and technologies, including horizon scanning, temporal mapping, causal layered analysis, and scenario planning.
