Essentials of Palliative Care

This course introduces primary palliative care. You will learn what it is, how to communicate with patients, show empathy, and practice difficult conversations. You will learn how to screen for distress and provide psychosocial support. You will learn about goals of care and advance care planning. Finally, you will explore cultural considerations.

Symptom Management in Palliative Care

(0 hours)
This course builds on Essentials of Palliative Care, focusing on communication, psychosocial support, and goals of care. You'll learn to assess and manage physical and psychological symptoms, including pain, nausea, fatigue, and distress.

Transitions in Care from Survivorship to Hospice

(0 hours)
This course builds on Symptom Management, continuing to develop primary palliative care skills. It explores transitions in care, including survivorship and hospice. You will learn to create a survivorship care plan and support patients, screen for spiritual distress, and discuss end-of-life care.

Supporting Families and Caregivers

(0 hours)
This course explores the challenges faced by families and caregivers of patients with serious illnesses. It provides strategies for supporting and empowering them, particularly focusing on children and their caregivers. By the end of this course, you will be equipped to provide essential support to those who play a crucial role in patient care and well-being.

Palliative Care Always Capstone Course

The Palliative Care Always Capstone course lets you test your knowledge about palliative care and help others understand its value. You will impact community awareness, promote self-care, and show off your communication skills in a virtual environment.

Learning objectives

  • The scope and role of palliative care as part of a patient and family's care plan
  • Components of a treatment plan for physical, psychosocial, and spiritual care, including screening, assessment and management of patient needs
  • Effective communication skills for responding to emotion, delivering difficult news, and discussing goals of care
  • Issues around transitions in care (e.g. survivorship or hospice transition)
