This Specialization enables learners to successfully apply core Java programming languages features & software patterns needed to develop maintainable mobile apps comprised of core Android components, as well as fundamental Java I/O & persistence mechanisms.

The Capstone project will integrate the material from throughout the Specialization to exercise and assess the ability of learners to create an interesting Android app by applying knowledge and skills learned in previous MOOCs, including Java programming features, Android Studio tools, Android Activity components, Material Design, file I/O and data persistence, unit testing, and software patterns. The project itself will be similar in design goals to previous assignments, however it will provide less of the skeleton code than earlier MOOCs provide to enable more creativity to learners and greater opportunity for learners to customize the app.

Five courses

Java for Android

(0 hours)
This MOOC teaches Java programming language features used in Android, the dominant platform for developing mobile apps. It covers Java features that control execution flow, enable access to structured data, group data into classes and interfaces, and customize behavior via inheritance and polymorphism. Learners will apply these features in the context of core Android components using Android Studio.

Android App Components - Intents, Activities, and Broadcast Receivers

This 4-week MOOC builds on Course 1, delving deeper into core Android app components like intents, activities, and broadcast receivers. You'll learn to program these components with Android concurrency frameworks, Java file I/O classes, and Android storage mechanisms. You'll also use the Git source code management system. Throughout the MOOC, you'll work on a project involving downloading, storing, and displaying images from remote websites.

Android App Components - Services, Local IPC, and Content Providers

This 4-week MOOC builds upon the core Android app components and concurrency frameworks covered in Course 2 by focusing on services, local IPC, and content providers. Case study apps will be examined to learn how to program these app components using Android's material design paradigm. Students will work on a hands-on project involving a material design-based RSS reader app.

Engineering Maintainable Android Apps

Engineering Maintainable Android Apps is a 4-week course that demonstrates methods for creating maintainable Android apps. Students will learn test-driven development methods, unit testing with JUnit and Robotium, and common Java/Android software patterns. The course includes video lectures, quizzes, and hands-on exercises.

Capstone MOOC for "Android App Development"

The Capstone project integrates material from the Android App Development Specialization to assess learners' ability to create an Android app. Learners will apply knowledge and skills learned in previous MOOCs, including Java programming, Android components, and testing. The project is similar in scope to previous assignments but enables learners to create a customized app that demonstrates their creativity and mastery of the Specialization topics.
