In this specialization, you will explore how many public health outcomes are directly influenced by human contact with the environment. The four courses in this series will introduce you to the environmental health sciences (EHS) discipline; you'll examine the hazards of air pollution, water pollution, solid and hazardous waste, radon, and noise; identify the major challenges posed by climate change and unsustainable practices; and use risk assessment to evaluate the health of population, advocate for environmental justice, and improve global health. Based on global and diverse cases, open-access readings, and engaging video lectures, you will learn how we can assess the effectiveness of policies designed to address and reduce the environmental threats to our health.

Four courses

Environmental Health: the Foundation of Global Public Health

The first course of the Impacts of the Environment on Global Public Health specialization provides a foundation in environmental health sciences (EHS). We will explore four main topics: an introduction to EHS and the exposure-disease model; key concepts in EHS and environmental health policies; the application of systems thinking to understand and analyze environmental health issues; and occupational health.

Environmental Hazards and Global Public Health

The second course of the Impacts of the Environment on Global Public Health specialization will explore environmental hazards including air pollution, water pollution, solid and hazardous waste, radon, and noise. We will explore how these hazards can harm human health and what we can do to minimize exposures and health impacts. We will also explore urban and global health, and the influence of the built environment on human health.

Climate Change, Sustainability, and Global Public Health

The third course of the Impacts of the Environment on Global Public Health specialization introduces two major environmental health challenges: climate change and sustainability. We will evaluate the causes and impacts of climate change, as well as policies and approaches to reduce its impacts on human health. We will also explore different sustainability frameworks and the effects of energy generation sources on the environment and public health.

Human Health Risks, Health Equity, and Environmental Justice

The final course of the Impacts of the Environment on Global Public Health specialization covers environmental justice and risk assessment. Environmental justice aims to avoid inequitable distribution of environmental health threats and ensure health equity. Risk assessment quantifies human health risks and identifies mitigation approaches. We will explore risk assessment steps and how it addresses environmental justice issues.
