English Common Law

The Common Law of England and Wales is one of the major global legal traditions. In order to understand the common law, we need to deal with its history, and the development of its characteristic institutions like the jury, judge made law, parliamentary sovereignty and due process. We also need to ask some critical questions. What role does democracy play in the development of the common law? To what extent are human rights central to the modern common law? How does the common law of England and Wales relate to the law of the European Union? Answering these questions will give us insights into the current challenges the law faces and its possible futures.

pretty good course Comprehensive introductory course that sets a good foundation for future study in English Law Thank you very much for such interesting and useful course, which allowed me, a man who lives in the country with another jurisdictional system, to get better acquainted with common law, its principles and values.

human rights

Good course, maybe it focuses too much on human rights to be a general introduction to the common law system.

It brings light to the development of Common law from historic to the modern times by drawing a parallel between the EU Law and UK law vis-a-vis human rights, institutions of Justice and law making.

Another reason I love this course because this course spreads the European law, especially the European Convention of Human Rights, to the whole duration of course which allow students like me to understand how and why this convention is so important to the English Common Law.

It has add knowledge to me as I'm pursuing a law class Goes into constitution, EU Human Rights, and lots more.

The course explores the interaction of UK law with the law of the international conventions (Human Rights and the European Union).

european union

It improved upon my knowledge of certain fundamentals, and expanded my appreciation of specific aspects of the Common Law, such as its relationship with European Union Legal traditions.

excels All talking, don't even have slides to assist with the presentation of materials, also seemed to have focused too much on the European Union/Convention instead of the Common Law itself.

united kingdom

As a practitioner of the Common Law currently operating in a Caribbean Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, this course was not merely helpful but timely.

This course is very useful and easy to understanding even if you are not living in the United Kingdom.

It will be interesting to see how the laws will change with The United Kingdom exiting the European Union.

reading comprehension

The assignments are more like reading comprehension tests than content tests.

Anyone with decent reading comprehension could pass without ever watching the video lectures.

Very high quality teaching and genuinely challenging reading comprehension-style assessments.

relationship between

The course provides a good understanding of the common law judicial system, presenting basic principles, relationship between powers and their structure of functioning.

I was disappointed that the last lecture deviated into less established legal territory where the lecturer conveyed a contested portrayal of the ideal normative relationship between the European Union and its constituent member states.
