Creative Writing

Creative Writing,

At the center of a good story are the characters in it. In this course aspiring writers will discover how to build and bring to life complex, vivid and unforgettable characters. We will study the choices a writer makes to bring all characters to life on the page, and we will perform written exercises in order to develop a variety of writing and pre-writing techniques, in order to create a variety of characters. We will learn how to use our own life experiences, and the people we know (and how not to!). We will develop inner (thoughts and feelings) and outer (appearance, habits, behavior) lives for our characters and see how that can lead us to richer and more interesting stories. We will breathe life into our characters and let them surprise us.

Amy Bloom top notch.

Ms. Amy Bloom is a great writer and lecturer!

I really enjoyed the lectures of the course and found Amy Bloom to be an informative and relatable writer and lecturer.

Amy Bloom is very clear in her thoughts and lucid in her explanations.

amy bloom, thank you, thank you, thank you ? I loved this course, but sometimes the assignments weren't quite clear.

Thanks to Amy Bloom and her guests!

Amy Bloom was brilliant.

Amy Bloom has a way about her that makes it very easy to receive her information, to take it in and digest it.

Professor Amy Bloom has a great pedagogic skill.

Amy Blooms assignments were so complicated and obtuse that they were hard to dive into.

so much

I learned so much, it's hard to pick just one thing.

The course is very well designed and Amy explains everything in so much detail.

Thank you so much for offering them.

Very good course, gave a lot of insight on writing and specially about the character This was a great course...so much detail and she asked to many questions that it really makes you think and then helps you to determine how to apply it to your story.

Thank you so much!

Thank you so much!!!!!

Excellent course - I have learned so much.

Thank you so much for the public access to this course!

Thank you :-) I gained a lot from the program but all four courses would benefit so much more by even minor contact from the staff.

I learned so much, thank you!

Thank you so much.

This course had some very challenging tasks, and I did find the instructions for one of the assignments a bit problematic, because many of my fellow students misinterpreted them (and it was tough reviewing them when you could clearly see that they did understand the instructions; a big shame). However, the instructor, Amy Bloom, was fantastic and I loved the way she delivered the course, and the material she covered.A very enjoyable, informative course that I wish would have lasted longer just because I loved it so much.

I liked so much.

The teacher and the professionals in the interviews were really helpful to advance and of course the other students opinions in the assignments makes me improve myself as writer, thank you so much for this oportunity.

creative writing

I already submitted a request for financial aid for creative writing specialization I don't know why it's not enabling me to access the homeworks please help me :( The financial aid was approved for this specialization why is it that they only let me access the first one???

I enjoyed every course in the Creative Writing Specialization.

Excellent On-line Course in Creative Writing developing Character.

Just as good as the others in the Creative Writing specialization.

Compared to other courses in the creative writing specialization, I felt that this one needs some improvement.

This was my least favourite course in the the Creative Writing Specialisation.

Another 5-star Wesleyan University creative writing course.

I recently completed the 5-course specialization in creative writing.

The second part of Wesleyan's Creative Writing course is, yet again, a wealth of knowledge for aspiring writers of all types.

Amy Bloom's way of taking you right down to the essence of things brings a debth to your understanding of creative writing and ups your work.

All of the Creative Writing courses have been helpful to me in grounding me in my writing practice.

such a great course to take in order to get familiar with the integral foundations for anyone who is interested in creative writing but does not know where to start.

There needs a higher commitment from Staff to engage with students enrolled in the Creative Writing Program.

They had some interesting thoughts, but for the most part they felt repetitive and for someone who hasn't written much creative writing. However, I really liked the assignments and peer editing.

peer review

I had a bad experience with peer review and reported it, but had not heard what consequences were brought against him.

The peer reviewed assignments are challenging and fun.

-- The questions asked of the peer reviewers are good ones.

The peer reviewed assignments are next to useless, as there is no oversight on them.

It was assumed we knew the basics of characterization, but most students did not!some of the other students frustration and confusion came out in the peer review, which was a bad sign.

Good course but let down by a lack of required readings and the awful peer review system.

Except for the peer review assignment.

The course was great but the quality of the student/peer review was abysmal.

Since the assigments are peer reviewed, no one can really tell you if you're wrong because we are all learning for the same videos with the same scattered information.

point of view

The course is well structured and the assignments well designed to help you to think about point of view and character and I found myself being able to develop a fictional character that I have had in my mind for a while.

It regenerated my creativity which is what I hoped for and it cleared up some confusion I had about point of view.

Had not given point of view so much brain time!!

Really interesting practice tasks Excellent course that teaches you the nuances of character, point of view and narration.

I loved learning about dialogue and point of view.

I found the writing tasks quite challenging, but they also offer great insights, especially in terms of the possibilities of which point of view to write from.

I learnt so much about the developing of characters and Week 4 about Point of view is incredible.

It was easy to understand and added so much to my understanding of characters and point of view.

craft of plot

The instruction regarding character development was not very useful compared to the insight provided in the Craft of Plot course.

I prefered the Craft of Plot course to this one, and I almost felt like I learned more about creating characters in that one than I did here.

In the Craft of Plot, Skyhorse gave us the tools we need to develop plot and structure, and even how to start to develop characters.

Craft of Plot gave me hope, Craft of Character confused me.

Not by far as good as the first module (Craft of Plot).

A helpful overall look at character but not particularly deep, still useful even for a refresher when writing something new I found this course less informative than the Craft of Plot.

In comparison to the Craft of Plot, this course spoke very vaguely and did not use other well-known books to elaborate on the ideas.

So far, this and the Craft of Plot have been excellent courses that I'd highly recommend.Thank you so much!

character development

The content on character development, the role of dialog and action in revealing characters, and POV/voice would be most helpful for novice writers (but perhaps also for experienced writers!)

You know something is amiss with your writing when a friend suggests more character development and you have to ask them what that means.

Learned enough about character development to help me with my fiction - and non-fiction.

Great inspirtation for practice writing simple easy but not that easy Assignment tho it's good for you Excellent scaffolding of exercises to provide a broad intro aspects of character development.

That aside, this course helps you consider character development on a more complex level.

I loved the course and the Professor Hosting A wonderful set of lectures and exercises that truly advance one's understanding of character development.

The lessons had little to do with actual character development and nothing about how to write a believable character; merely repetitive"insights" from other authors. At first, I had really looked forward to the class, but once it started I worked fast to get it over with as quickly as possible.

creating characters

I really liked the course director Any Bloom, who has an engaging, calm manner and gave very useful insights into writing about character and creating characters that feel as if they have a life beyond the page.

My only feedback is that at least few of tools and methods should be explained to students as a beginner will have an extremely difficult time in creating characters.

I learnt a bit about creating characters but I found the lessons bland and the assignments difficult to understand.

I like Amy Bloom, but the lectures don't provide the explanations or the processes for creating characters.

Some really good inputs on creating characters (and on creating the voice of the narrator), as well as creating the tone of a piece of writing in general.

Whether you are a hobbyist writer or a literature student, whether you dream to publish or keep your writing close to you in your journal - this course will literally "Blow a Soul" in your writing, with the ability of creating characters, whom we find connection with!Various methods and also experience shared by many seasoned novelists!Thank you Wesleyan University and Coursera, for providing such a wonderful course!

It makes invaluable contributions to the subject of creating characters.

peer reviews

The "wtf" added on peer reviews should not be tolerated and that student should not be accepted for a period.

It is not a place for vulgar, rude and negative peer reviews, and coming from someone who also is taking a course to learn the craft or subject.

For each assignment I had at least one of the three peer reviews that was useless to me to improve my writing, sometimes more.

Some of the questions asked for the peer-to-peer reviews were very unclear.

The most valuable part was the weekly writing assignments, and the peer reviews.

One word peer reviews should not be allowed.

Peer reviews have been insightful and I've enjoyed reading other's work.

felt like

I enjoyed the assignments and felt like they challenged and stretched me in good ways.Criticisms include: some confusing titles - why is the third section called Location, Location, Location, when it is the second section that is about location?

I felt like the teaching was fairly abstract, and I had a difficult time figuring out how I was supposed to apply certain lessons.

It really felt like being with a friend at a coffeeshop, analyzing different parts of books and stories that we've read and commenting on them.

I really felt like I have pushed myself and learned something through taking these classes!

I felt like I needed to see those things in action, on paper.

video lectures

I loved the peer-reviewed assignments, the video lectures and the interviews.

The ability to speed up and slow down the video lectures is fantastic.

Amy Bloom was an exceptional Instructor, both in her lesson planning and video lectures and interviews, as well as in her caring monitoring of the class involvement, progress and questions.

The video lectures just didn't have enough meat to them.
