Social and Economic Networks

Learn how to model social and economic networks and their impact on human behavior. How do networks form, why do they exhibit certain patterns, and how does their structure impact diffusion, learning, and other behaviors? We will bring together models and techniques from economics, sociology, math, physics, statistics and computer science to answer these questions. The course begins with some empirical background on social and economic networks, and an overview of concepts used to describe and measure networks. Next, we will cover a set of models of how networks form, including random network models as well as strategic formation models, and some hybrids. We will then discuss a series of models of how networks impact behavior, including contagion, diffusion, learning, and peer influences. social and economic networks

Social and Economic Networks: Models and Analysis is an introductory network theory and analysis course offered by Stanford through the Coursera MOOC platform geared toward learners who are comfortable with basic statistics, probability and linear algebra.

A solid, well-structured, introduction into the theory of network analysis applied to social and economic networks, by Professor Matthew O. Jackson, supported by his book "Social and Economic Networks" (optional).

Social and economic networks is an introductory network theory and analysis course geared toward learners who have are comfortable with basic statistics, probability and linear algebra.

Social and economic networks provides all the raw information you need to get a solid grounding in network theory and analysis, but the presentation style is impersonal so the content is not particularly engaging.

All in all, social and economic networks is worthwhile course if you are interested in social networks and aren't intimidated by a bit of math, but I wouldn't take it for fun.

Dear Matthew,Thank you so much for a wonderful introduction to social and economic networks.

I would love to take a more advanced course of social and economic networks.

games on networks

The course has 7 weeks of lecture content covering network basics, measures of centrality, network formation models and diffusion, learning and games on networks.

However, there are still several concepts I'm really, really fuzzy on, such as Pareto efficiency, games on networks, Nash stability, & strategic complements/substitutes.

very well presented

Extremely interesting and very well presented course.

Very complex topic, very well presented.

recommend this course

The Professor is to the point and doesn't lack knowledge in his field.I'd recommend this course for anyone interested in Economics.

I highly recommend this course.

prof. jackson

Prof. Jackson is an outstanding teacher, and I very much enjoyed this course.

I also think that Prof. Jackson's treatment of mathematical concepts is entirely optimal given the diverse audience he most likely has: it is technical, but definitely not going into the more formal details you would get in a math course.

Would love more from Prof. Jackson!

Lucidly taught by Prof. Jackson.

Also, some of the Gephi instructions were not quite clear enough.Getting Prof. Jackson's book as a companion to this course is very useful.

This is highly recommended to anyone interested in Social Networks and networks or graph theory in general.

I highly recommend it, and after that you are ready to read the literature of the area.

anyone interested

Probably gonna do some studying on my own now :) Great teacher A great course for anyone interested in learning about networks and social interactions.

I recommend it to anyone interested in analyzing how societies and their members behave and that when it seems difficult you stick it out.

final exam

The 8th week is reserved for a final exam.

The quizzes and final exam are definitely doable but understanding everything perfectly is not an easy task.

rather than

Hopefully this lecture give more interactive approach (like animated presentation, pop up question, and so on) rather than voice of text in the slide The discussion forums ought to be more responsive Wonderful course Exceptional Course and very good teaching !!!

It should have a demonstrative part rather than just talking about it and showing the formula.

game theory

This course is amazing, worth it a lot, I learned about game theory, mathematics, sociology.

Although for coursera standars, its very extensive and not so basic, that´s why I think its great I began my MOOCaholicism with his Game Theory class a year ago.

Prof. O'Jackson is clearly incredibly capable in network analysis and game theory and he teaches the concepts in a remarkably concise and understandable manner.
