Many of us derive inspiration from watching natural history documentaries and their astounding catalogue of wild animal behaviours.  In this course, we will explore how scientists study animal behaviour, and in particular how behaviour is shaped by the evolutionary forces of natural and sexual selection. Topics include resource acquisition; avoiding enemies; mate choice and sexual conflict; cues, signals and communication; parental care and social behaviour; and the role of genes, environments and learning in regulating behavioural diversity.  We draw on examples from across the animal kingdom to illustrate the complex mechanisms underlying adaptations, and complement these with natural history videos that highlight key concepts. We evaluate the scientific rigour of studies used to test theory, and highlight the often ingenious methods adopted by researchers to understand animal behaviour. This course will help you understand the remarkable behaviours of wild animals from an evolutionary perspective.  [Image: Peacock spider. The study of Animal Behavior may introduce you to the field of Zoology, which Animal Behaviorists often major in. There are a variety of career paths for an Animal Behaviorist, this role often works with companion animals, zoo animals, or animals in the wild. An Animal Behaviorist may provide animal training or behavior modification advice to pet owners, or work on conservation projects that include training endangered species.
Zoologist
A Zoologist studies the behavior, anatomy, genetics, and classification of animals. The Animal Behavior course may introduce you to Zoology, which is the study of animals. Animal Behavior is one of the major subfields of Zoology. Zoologists often work in research roles or as university professors. Many Zoologists go on to work at zoos, wildlife refuges, or animal rescue organizations.
Wildlife Biologist
A Wildlife Biologist studies the behavior, habitat, and populations of wild animals. The Animal Behavior course may introduce you to the field of Wildlife Biology. The study of animal behavior is essential to working as a Wildlife Biologist, as you will need to understand an animal's behavior in order to protect its habitat or manage its population. Many Wildlife Biologists go on to work with government agencies or non-profit organizations that focus on conservation.
