En ce début de XXIe siècle marqué par les crises économiques et politiques, la philanthropie joue un rôle croissant pour répondre aux grands défis de notre temps. Alternative au modèle marchand et à la redistribution publique via l’impôt, le don privé est activement recherché pour financer la lutte contre la pauvreté, l’éducation, la recherche médicale ou la culture… Partout dans le monde, les fondations se multiplient, les dons se développent et influencent la vie de très nombreuses personnes. Les besoins sont immenses et la concurrence pour trouver des fonds n’a jamais été aussi vive.

Malgré son importance, la philanthropie reste mal connue notamment en France et en Europe. Plusieurs questions clés restent en suspens : De quoi parle-t-on exactement ? Qu’est-ce qui motive les philanthropes et favorise leur action ? Quelles sont les différentes façons d’agir en philanthropie ? Quel est son impact et comment l’évaluer? L’objectif de ce MOOC est de répondre à ces quatre grandes questions, en mobilisant les dernières avancées en matière de recherche et le point de vue d’experts reconnus dans leur domaine.

Que vous soyez simplement curieux de découvrir le sujet, déjà donateur ou engagé dans une démarche philanthropique, ou un professionnel qui accompagne ou sollicite des philanthropes, ce MOOC est fait pour vous ! Qu’est-ce que la philanthropie ?
Ce premier module donne toutes les clés pour comprendre ce qu’est la philanthropie. Vous apprendrez ce que signifie ce mot et comment son sens a évolué au fil du temps. Vous voyagerez dans l’histoire de la philanthropie de l’Antiquité à nos jours, à travers l’exemple de la France. Vous découvrirez les chiffres-clés et le marché de la collecte de fonds aujourd’hui. Vous comprendrez l’environnement juridique et fiscal dans lequel la philanthropie se pratique. Enfin, vous participerez aux grands débats sur le rôle de la philanthropie et ses rapports avec l’Etat et le capitalisme.

Qu'est ce qui motive les philanthropes ?
Dans ce module, nous explorerons les derniers résultats de la recherche en psychologie, en économie, en sociologie et même en neurosciences pour dresser le “portrait-robot” de ceux qui donnent, mais aussi pour découvrir les 7 grandes familles de motivations philanthropiques : l’altruisme, le plaisir de donner, le calcul coûts-bénéfices, la recherche d’efficacité, la réputation, la réciprocité et l’obligation morale. A l’issue de ce module, vous aurez une compréhension très fine des mécanismes du don et découvrirez donc ce qui motive la philanthropie.
Comment pratiquer la philanthropie ?
Ce troisième module vous propose de répondre à l’épineuse question de “comment donner ?” Cette réflexion stratégique est cruciale pour les grands donateurs, les entreprises et les fondations, qui doivent choisir parmi une myriade de possibilités et assumer leurs choix. Comment définir les objectifs d’une initiative philanthropique ? Comment tracer le chemin pour atteindre ces objectifs ? Comment formuler une stratégie philanthropique ? Quels sont les grands dilemmes auxquels sont confrontés les philanthropes ? Nous évoquerons également quelques pratiques innovantes qui viennent bousculer la philanthropie traditionnelle. Ce module intéressera bien sûr les financeurs mais aussi tous ceux qui interagissent avec eux.
Quel est l'impact de la philanthropie ?
Avec le dernier module de ce MOOC, nous nous intéressons aux conséquences de la philanthropie. Car aussi bonnes que soient nos intentions, toute action philanthropique n’est pas obligatoirement synonyme de changement positif pour les bénéficiaires ou les causes soutenues. Ce module vous propose de réfléchir aux questions suivantes : Quels sont les effets de la philanthropie sur ses parties prenantes ? Pourquoi est-ce important d’y prêter attention ? Qu’est-ce que la notion d’impact (social) de la philanthropie ? Comment s’y prendre pour l’évaluer ? A l’issue de ce module, vous aurez un cadre méthodologique précis et des pistes concrètes pour y répondre par vous-mêmes.
