This unique take on a classic exercise is designed for giving the student a basic level of upper body strength. The press up movement is essential for building a greater level of punching power. A traditional stance movement is added on to the press up, which allows the student to develop a more functional foundation whilst building their upper body strength simultaneously
This well known exercise is designed to give the student a basic level of cardio. The star squat is a unique take on the classic “jumping jack” movement with the addition of a stance exercise added on.
By completing this fitness test the student can determine they have reached the basic level of fitness preparing them to train in the Sil Lim Tao system. Testing allows the student to gauge their basic fitness and gain an understanding of their capability. Students are able to track their progress as they steadily improve a will know when they are ready to continue to the next phase of their training.

These basic stances are the beginning of learning to “Know Yourself”. Developing leg strength will allow the student to become functional from a solid base. This solid base is achieved through regularly practicing the basic stance exercises.
This well known Wing Chun position is fundamental to build posture, leg strength and correct body alignment.
Leg strengthening is essential to the level 1 practitioner. Leg strengthening is designed to develop the student’s basic understanding of their leg capability. Improved leg strength leads to a stronger foundation and greater functionality.
This fundamental Wing Chun position provides the student with an introductory understanding of weight distribution and posture.
This essential and versatile stance is used throughout the Master Wong system. This well known position creates greater leg strength, corrects posture, and is key skill to be learned in preparation for more advanced training, such as the 6 ½ points Pole and Butterfly knife forms.
These three stances are linked together for practice of the transition from one stance to another. As you do so you will develop leg greater strength, strengthen connective tissues and gain a more in depth understanding of each position.
It’s important for the student to self check their movements by referring back to the lesson material to see if the technique, positioning match the demonstrations. You should recognize strength improving and ensure everything is up to standard before moving on with the course.
These hand exercises are essential in developing correct positioning. Each exercise will give you a basic understanding of the dynamic hand positions found in the Sil Lim Tao. (palms are used rather than fist in to hard areas of the body to avoid injury danger injury. One hand attacks as the other guards.
Turning in goat stance with hand position is a fundamental principle of Sil Lim Tao. Learning to use your upper and lower body as one unit. Blending these movements together allows the student to understand how to apply basic static positions.
This exercise gives the student an in depth explanation regarding the mechanics and delivery of the standard Wing Chun punch. Attaining a strong punch and wrist is essential and can be enhanced through fist press-ups.
This exercise is designed to accustom the student to targeting specific areas of the body, improving both punch accuracy and delivery.
This famously classic movement is a robust and explosive series of punches. This movement allows the student to understand the unique rolling effect, which is later adapted into combat use.
This exercise is ideal for conditioning the fist with the use of either a wall or heavy punch bag. The movement is essential in targeting specific areas of the body in close range. The generation of power is produced through the practice of waist rotation exercises.
This exercise combines hand and leg movements simultaneously. This gives the student an initial understanding of combat functionality and body positioning. The straight palm is practiced with a moving
Goat stance; this gives a greater understanding of generating power from the waist.
Once again hand and leg movements are used simultaneously in the goat stance. This exercise focuses on correct positioning to ensure the students safety when defending.
When training this technique in goat stance, it’s useful to ensure strong and correct technique. This will also improve the students positioning.
For the high palm the hands and legs continue to work together in the goat stance. The hand positioned is altered to target a higher area of your opponent.
This movement is used to attack both sides of the neck, generating power from the moving goat stance. At all times the student should be aware of the positioning of both hands. The front hand carrying out the chop. The rear hand guarding, ready to support and respond as needed later
This moving is specifically focused to the throat. Using the knife-edge of the hand along with the goat stance movement delivers a direct strike. Hand and leg positioning are essential in performing these techniques.
Once again, it is important for the student to check their technique and body positioning before continuing through the course. Building strength and stamina is crucial before moving on.
The student will work both the hands and feet together. A good understanding of the basics of stance work, weight bearing and balancing will enhance the student’s ability to move. Allowing the student to progress easily. The student must be able to carry their own weight efficiently around to make the movement functional in combat. This is the principle of “Know Yourself”.
This exercise enables the student to understand how to move using the hands and feet simultaneously. The 70:30 stance enhances weight-bearing exercises to strengthen the leg and develop good posture.
This exercise builds upon the previous lessons, building on the fundamental principles of the hand and feet moving together to generate power. A punching movement is added in this exercise to ensure that the student is familiar with moving and attacking in the 70:30 positions.
A triple punch is added onto the basic stepping movement to allow the student to focus on the continuous rolling momentum of the triple punch. Once again, this exercise ensures that the student understands that the hand and feet must work simultaneously.
This exercise further ensures that the student’s hand and feet coordination is strengthened by the addition of a second kicking exercise. The front kick teaches the student how to make use of the heel when attacking and further ensures that the student understands the standard 70:30 position in the Sil Lim Tao.
The round kick develops the student’s foot positioning as well as familiarising the student’s body with positions for targeting specific areas of the opponent. This exercise teaches the student to balance and turn, making their legs stronger.
The sidekick develops the students kicking ability further by ensuring that the student can effectively balance, turn and kick in a higher line of attack. The 70:30 positioning is further reinforced to ensure that the student’s leg foundation is up to standard.
This exercise introduces the first kicking technique added onto the basic stepping. The chop kick movement enables the student to balance effectively and support their own body weight when kicking in a low line of attack.
Static kicking ensures that the student develops greater balance, coordination and technique necessary to develop kicking power. Each exercise enables the student to possess the basic understanding needed to develop each movement used in Sil Lim tao. Static position training will allow the student to break down movements to a more simplified version to develop strength and techniq
This exercise ensures that the student develops the balance and coordination needed to use the front kick in the standard 70:30 position. This exercise further explains how to move and practice kicking correctly when making contact with the heavy bag. The use of the heavy bag and practicing in the 70:30 position enables the student to practice kicking with resistance both technique, coordination and weight transfer efficiently.
This movement ensures that the student develops the correct foot positioning and balance needed to make the round kick functional. How to practice the round kick with the use of the heavy bag is explained once again to ensure that the student develops clean technique and agility to move around a solid target.
This exercise also helps to develop the correct line positioning and coordination necessary to use the sidekick effectively. The sidekick is practiced in the 70:30 position once again to develop clean kicking technique and coordination. The use of a heavy bag is demonstrated once more to help the student to understand how to effectively move and deliver the kick against a solid target.
The final static kicking exercise ensures that the student develops the balance and correct positioning needed to use the chop kick effectively. As a highly versatile kick in the Sil Lim Tao system, the heavy bag is used to allow the student the confidence in delivering a powerful chop kick against a solid target.
As a result of previous training, the student legs should be developing and becoming stronger. Static training focuses on developing strength, balance & generating power.

This exercise covers the entirety of the Sil Lim Tao form. A fundamental understanding of hand positioning and correct technique in each section of the form is needed to link each position to combat use. The practitioner should consistently practice the entirety of the form to ensure that a good understanding of posture, hand positioning and body mechanics is maintained. At this stage it in paramount that the student ensures that there form is up to a high standard. Clean technique & correct positioning, will allow the student to further understand the purpose of each movement. This is a crucial checkpoint for the student to ensure there form & application is good. If it is, then they will be able to move on and improve much more easily.
Wall bag exercises are essential to enable the student to develop power against a solid target. This type of training can also be used to develop the student’s distance control as well as conditioning the fists to build greater wrist strength and punching power. The sectioned areas of the wall bag are essential in developing accuracy in the Sil Lim Tao system.
This exercise mainly develops the punching power and accuracy of the student’s straight punch. Three punches are delivered to each section of the wall bag to get the student used to targeting both the low and high lines of attack.
This exercise develops the student’s static punching power and focuses on the use of the rolling motion of the triple punch. The sectioned areas of the wall bag simulate different areas of the body and allow the student to target and deliver multiple punches to the bag quickly.
This movement is ideal for conditioning each section of the fist. Attacking both the high and low lines of the wall bag with the vertical punch and hammer fist ensures that the student develops good accuracy with each type of attack.
This type of training is very useful to see what standard the student is at. It allows the student to filter out any mistakes in preparation for partner training.
