Genes and the Human Condition (From Behavior to Biotechnology)

This was a quirky look at the role genetics play in our lives - the lecturers were easy to understand and the assessment tasks highly relevant.

This course was very informative.The concepts are quite easy to understand.I surely recommend students who want to learn all the basics of biotechnology.

Both professors provided fantastic and enjoyable lectures; the course was like a really great book that you can't put down.I would strongly recommend this course for anyone who is interested in learning a bit more about human genetics.

And I would recommend this course to others.

Dr. O'Brien's lectures were somewhat like you'd expect from an introductory science course, but Dr. St. Leger's lectures were more like what you might expect from a "science cafe" type of informal lecture.

Brien and St. Leger, This was my first course -- ever-- on genetics or biology (excluding gradeschool).

My first step to know about DNA, epigenetic, human ancestors, and genetic engineering.

their lectures were easy to follow and brought up a lot of things i hadn't considered before (but this is my first completed genetics class).

I really enjoyed the short segment near the end that delved into the field of biotechnology.

I enjoyed the subject matter but the teaching style was old, mundane, and different to follow.

The knowledge and enthusiasm of the faculty for the subject matter comes thru and makes the entire experience Excellent material and instructors!

Really interesting material and well taught, even entertaining at times!

You might think at times that the professor is not a scientist but a philosopher as well.The course is taught superbly by both professor and assistant, not one extra word, and not one word missing given the choice of topics.

There's quite a bit of breadth in the topics covered (from behavior to biotechnology), but not a lot of depth; the course will whet your appetite to explore some of the topics in more detail.

They do link to some resources for more exploration of the topics covered, but I wish they had linked to more academic resources as well.

The first part was great about human genetics.

There isn't really any prior experience with the material necessary (assuming you understand basic biology), because the professors manage to explain everything on it's own terms without presupposition of any prior knowledge.

Didn't get into the mechanics of genetics or molecular biology as much as I had hoped.

This course lays an exceptional foundation for exploring a variety of in-depth topics covered with a more narrow focus elsewhere on Coursera (e.g., molecular biology, evolution, human behavior, neuroscience, &c).Tammatha O'Brien’s initial lectures did a particularly good job of introducing basic genetics with accessible metaphors, without allowing those metaphors to be overextended.
