Before we start learning 3-D/digital fashion, let's first understand the different stages of 3D/digital fashion:

  1. 3D modeling: 3D modeling is the process of creating a three-dimensional representation of an object or scene using specialized software. The resulting model can be viewed from different angles and can be used in a variety of applications, including video games, movies, architecture, product design, and engineering.

    In 3D modeling, the user creates a digital mesh by manipulating vertices, edges, and faces, which make up the shape of the model. Hence pattern-making becomes an important part of learning modeling for 3D/digital fashion.

  2. Finishing Process: garment finishing is one of the important processes of 3-D/digital fashion designing. Every garment consists of seams ( edges ) and trims ( buttons, zippers, labels,s, etc). Communicating those effects brings realism to the garment and is a very important process.

  3. Texturing Process: 3D texturing is the process of adding surface details, patterns, and color to a 3D model to create a realistic or stylized appearance. Texturing can make a 3D model appear more lifelike, by simulating the appearance of materials such as metal, wood, stone, or fabric. It can also be used to add intricate details, such as cracks, scratches, and imperfections, to make the model look more realistic. The texturing process involves creating fabric and communicating fabric properties like weaving, prints, embossing, embroidery, etc.

  4. Rendering Process: Rendering is all about communicating the story through lights, camera, and the environment. This is a very crucial step as it brings your design to realism as it interacts with light. The rendering process can be computationally intensive and time-consuming, as it involves complex mathematical calculations to determine how light interacts with the 3D model. Different rendering techniques can be used to achieve different visual effects and levels of realism.

  5. Animation Process: Animation is fun as it bring life to your creation. The process of creating a 3D animation involves several steps, including modeling, rigging, animation, and rendering. The 3D model is first created using specialized software, and then a digital skeleton, called a rig, is attached to the model to enable it to be animated. The animation is then created by manipulating the rig and keyframing the movement of the model over time. Finally, the animation is rendered into a sequence of images or a video file.

  2. Browzwear - Browzwear's main product is called VStitcher, which is a 3D clothing design software that enables designers to create and visualize virtual garments. Using VStitcher, designers can create 3D models of garments, apply textures and materials, and see how they will look on a virtual human body. The software includes advanced features like realistic draping, fabric simulation, and virtual fitting, which help designers to create accurate and realistic virtual garments. There are other software like Optitex, and Tuka3D but not very beginner friendly and are available for easy use.

For example, a rough, weathered texture might be used to create a realistic appearance for a building or landscape, while a sleek, shiny texture might be used for a modern product design.

The process of 3D texturing typically involves applying a texture map, which is a 2D image that is wrapped around the surface of the 3D model. The texture map is created using specialized software and can be painted by hand or created using photographs or other reference materials. Once the texture map is applied to the 3D model, it can be adjusted using various tools to create the desired look and feel. Finally, the textured 3D model can be rendered to create a realistic or stylized image or animation.

  5. Blenderkit (Free) - Thousands of free texture and assets files.

  6. Adobe Sampler (Paid) - Create fabric from scratch.
