This series of short courses is excerpted from OSU’s Master Gardener online course, allowing you to study specific fundamentals of gardening. In Herbaceous Ornamental Plants, you will learn about different types of herbaceous ornamental plants (perennials, ferns, grasses and more), and how to use and care for them in a garden setting.

Please note: Taking all self-paced courses will not allow you to receive a Certificate of Home Horticulture or become an OSU Master Gardener. These courses are entirely self-paced and are not taught by an instructor.

What you'll learn:
  • To define, and provide an example of, annuals, perennials, biennials, geophytes, grasses, ferns, and vines
  • To select suitable plants for a specific site by considering exposure, water zoning, color, size, hardiness zones
  • To identify different styles of planting and how they affect labor and water use
  • To describe how to prepare soil for planting herbaceous ornamentals
  • To give examples of good cultural management practices for herbaceous gardens, including watering, weeding, mulching, and fertilization
