Reviews summary

Moving first-hand accounts of world war 1

This course uses stories to sensitively and movingly recount one hundred experiences of World War I. As a result, learners have an intimate look into the realities for soldiers, their families and their communities. A significant amount of time is spent on Australian stories while exploring archives. Be aware that this course is a grim look at the war and mainly focuses on the horrendous realities for those involved. While reviewers found it to be an important course, it is emotionally demanding.
Course is well produced.
"The course is very well done, with a wide range of topics as well as with experts that display their knowledge in a clearly and constructive way."
Many stories focus on Australia.
"This is an excellent introduction to World War I... I didn't fully realize at the outset that the stories all centered on Australia; I had expected something a little more geographically diverse..."
Examines experiences without much historical context.
"...stories appear to have been chosen deliberately to show Australian participants in WW1 as victims, and in particular to portray those who survived the war as victims of postwar Australian authorities presented as callous, penny-pinching and incompetent..."
Can be emotionally taxing.
"All stories are very grim."
"...the aim of the stories seems to be to generate an emotional response based on 21st century norms rather than a deeper awareness of historical context."
