Space Law

Save

Space Law, a body of law governing activities in outer space, encompasses both international agreements and national regulations. Its development has been driven by the growing human presence in space, with the overarching goal of maintaining peace and order in this unique environment.

International Space Law

International Space Law emerged with the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957. The United Nations (UN) established the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in 1959 to address the legal implications of space exploration. This resulted in the adoption of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, which serves as the cornerstone of international space law.

The Outer Space Treaty sets forth the principles of space law, including:

  • Outer space is not subject to national appropriation and is free to be explored and used by all states.
  • Space activities shall be conducted for peaceful purposes.
  • States are responsible for their national space activities and are liable for any damage caused by their space objects.
  • Astronauts are considered envoys of mankind in outer space and shall be returned safely in case of distress.
