Questioning is a skill that can be used to promote learning and understanding. It can be used to assess student learning, to stimulate discussion, and to help students develop critical thinking skills. There are many different types of questions that can be used, and the type of question that is most effective will vary depending on the purpose of the questioning and the audience.
Types of Questions
There are many different ways to categorize questions. One common way is to divide questions into two broad categories: open-ended questions and closed-ended questions.
-
Open-ended questions are questions that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no response. They require the student to provide a more detailed answer, and they can be used to assess student understanding, to stimulate discussion, and to help students develop critical thinking skills.
-
Closed-ended questions are questions that can be answered with a simple yes or no response. They can be used to quickly assess student learning, but they do not provide as much information about student understanding as open-ended questions.
