Software-defined perimeters (SDPs) are a fundamental component of modern cybersecurity strategies. They have emerged in response to the growing need for a more flexible, agile, and secure approach to network security.
Understanding Software-defined Perimeters (SDPs)
The traditional approach to network security has been to establish a fixed perimeter around the network, using firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security controls to protect the network from external threats. However, this approach is no longer sufficient in today's highly distributed and dynamic IT environments.
SDPs are a new approach to network security that leverages software-defined networking (SDN) technologies to create a flexible and adaptive security perimeter. SDPs allow organizations to define and enforce security policies based on the identity of the user, the device they are using, and the application they are accessing.
The Benefits of SDPs
SDPs offer a number of benefits over traditional network security approaches, including:

This NIST publication provides a comprehensive overview of the Zero Trust security model, including the concept of SDPs as a key component for establishing trust boundaries and securing network access.
Comprehensive guide to understanding and implementing SDPs. It covers topics such as SDP architecture, design principles, implementation strategies, and integration with other security controls. It is written by highly experienced and well-respected authors in the field.
Explores the role of SDPs in securing cloud-based networks, discussing the challenges and solutions for implementing SDPs in a hybrid or multi-cloud environment.
Provides a comprehensive overview of SDN, including the benefits, challenges, and best practices for implementation. It covers topics such as SDN architecture, OpenFlow, and network programmability. While it does not focus specifically on SDPs, it provides a good foundation for understanding the concepts behind SDPs.
Provides a comprehensive overview of zero trust networks, which are a key component of SDPs. It covers topics such as zero trust architecture, design principles, and implementation strategies.
