T cells, also known as T lymphocytes, are a type of white blood cell that plays a critical role in the adaptive immune system. They are responsible for recognizing and destroying infected or cancerous cells, and for orchestrating the immune response to foreign invaders. T cells are a diverse group of cells, with different subsets of T cells having different functions. The two main types of T cells are cytotoxic T cells (Tc cells) and helper T cells (Th cells).
What are cytotoxic T cells?
Cytotoxic T cells, also known as killer T cells, are responsible for directly killing infected or cancerous cells. They do this by releasing toxic substances that perforate the target cell's membrane, causing it to die. Cytotoxic T cells are activated when they recognize a specific antigen presented on the surface of a target cell. The antigen is a short peptide fragment that is derived from a protein that is expressed by the target cell. Once activated, cytotoxic T cells will proliferate and differentiate into effector T cells, which are capable of killing target cells.
