Ecosystems are complex and dynamic communities of living organisms and their non-living environment, interacting as a system. The study of ecosystems, or ecology, examines the relationships between organisms and their surroundings, exploring how they influence each other's survival and well-being.
What is an Ecosystem?
Ecosystems encompass a wide range of scales, from microscopic environments like a drop of water to vast biomes like a tropical rainforest. Each ecosystem has unique characteristics determined by its physical and chemical conditions, such as climate, soil type, and water availability.
Within an ecosystem, organisms depend on each other for survival and resources. Producers, like plants, use sunlight to create food through photosynthesis. Consumers, like animals, rely on producers for sustenance. Decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, break down organic matter, returning nutrients to the ecosystem.
