What are Cryptographic Keys?

A cryptographic key is a piece of information that controls the operation of a cryptographic algorithm for encryption or decryption. Cryptographic keys are strings of binary digits that control how data is encrypted and decrypted. The key must remain secret to those who are not authorized to view the plaintext version of the encrypted data. In contrast, the algorithm can be public.

How do Cryptographic Keys Work?
