DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a standardized format for storing, transmitting, and viewing medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. It was developed in the late 1980s to promote interoperability among different medical imaging devices and software systems, and has since become the de facto standard for medical image exchange.
