MITRE is a not-for-profit organization that operates federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) and is best known for its expertise in cybersecurity. MITRE was originally formed as a missile system research organization, and the name MITRE was derived from the names of the three organizations that founded it: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Institute for Cooperative Research, and Thompson Ramo Wooldridge Inc.
General Overview
In 2004, MITRE participated in the development of the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) system with the United States National Vulnerability Database (NVD). A CVE is a unique identifier that is assigned to every publicly known vulnerability. In 2007, MITRE started sponsoring the Embedded Systems Security Summit. MITRE has also developed The Common Weakness Scoring System (CWSS), which is used to identify, describe, and score the severity of software weaknesses.
