Historical linguistics is the study of how languages change over time. It involves examining the evolution of sound systems, grammar, and vocabulary in order to understand the historical development of languages and the relationships between them. Historical linguistics can be used to trace the origins of languages, to reconstruct extinct languages, and to shed light on the history of cultures and societies.
