Current Procedural Terminology, commonly known as CPT, is an essential coding system used by healthcare professionals to report medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures and services to insurance companies and other healthcare payers. CPT codes are used to describe the details of the procedure or service performed, enabling accurate billing and reimbursement.
CPT Coding: An Overview
CPT coding is maintained by the American Medical Association (AMA) and updated annually to reflect advancements in medical practices and technology. It consists of five main categories:
-
Evaluation and Management (E/M) Codes: These codes describe office visits, consultations, and other non-procedural services.
-
Anesthesia Codes: These codes represent the administration of anesthesia during surgical or diagnostic procedures.
-
Surgery Codes: These codes cover various surgical procedures performed in different body systems.
-
Radiology Codes: These codes describe imaging procedures such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs.
-
Pathology and Laboratory Codes: These codes represent laboratory tests and pathology services.
CPT codes are alphanumeric and typically consist of five characters. The first character is a number, followed by four alphanumeric characters. Each code is assigned a specific description that provides details about the procedure or service.
