Buprenorphine is a medication used to treat opioid addiction. It is a partial opioid agonist, meaning that it binds to opioid receptors in the brain and produces some of the same effects as opioids, but it does so to a lesser extent. This makes buprenorphine less likely to produce euphoria or respiratory depression than full opioid agonists, such as heroin or oxycodone. Buprenorphine is also less addictive than full opioid agonists, and it can help people to reduce their cravings for opioids and to maintain abstinence from opioid use.
