Application Security Groups (ASGs) are a fundamental aspect of network security in cloud computing environments like Azure. They enable administrators to define and enforce security policies for inbound and outbound traffic at the application level, providing granular control over network access to virtual machines (VMs) and other Azure resources.
Understanding Application Security Groups
An ASG is a logical grouping of network security rules that govern how traffic flows to and from a set of VMs or other resources within a virtual network. Each security rule defines a set of criteria that packets must meet to be allowed or denied access. This allows administrators to implement fine-grained access control, ensuring that only authorized traffic reaches specific applications or services.
ASGs can be applied to subnets, network interfaces, or individual VMs, providing flexibility in defining security policies. By assigning ASGs to resources, administrators can control the flow of traffic at the application layer, supplementing the network-level security provided by virtual networks and network security groups.
