The easy way to describe the simple present tense is that it is often used to describe habits, facts, what is generally true, and even repeated actions. It can also be used to describe a future event that is already scheduled. Once you grasp the simple present tense, you will have a good foundation for using other tenses because it is the foundation for the other tenses.
Why Would You Want to Study This Topic?
From daily conversations to business communications, the simple present tense is used frequently. It is considered the most basic of all the tenses and is used to convey information in its simplest form. Other reasons to learn this tense are that it is used in news reports, scientific writing, instructions, and to narrate stories. Quite simply, it is the tense that is used more than any other tense in the English language.
Here are examples of the simple present tense in use:
- The sun rises in the east.
- Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
- I go to work every day.
- She likes to read books.
- We don’t like loud music.
These statements are true in general, therefore, they are written in the simple present tense. The simple present tense can also be used to talk about future events that are already scheduled. For example:
The train leaves at 10:00 AM.
