Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is the professional practice of teaching English to non-native speakers. TESL is also known as Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Due to the global nature of today's economy and culture, there is an increased need for English language teachers both in the United States and abroad. In fact, according to the Center for Applied Linguistics, there are over 1 billion English language learners worldwide. As a result, there is a high demand for qualified TESL and TEFL teachers to provide instruction to these learners.
What is TESL?
TESL is a specialized field of education that focuses on the teaching of English to non-native speakers. TESL teachers work with students from a variety of backgrounds and with varying levels of English proficiency. TESL teachers help their students to develop their English language skills in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. In addition, TESL teachers help their students to learn about American culture and to develop cross-cultural communication skills.
Why Learn TESL?
There are many reasons why someone might want to learn TESL. Some people learn TESL because they want to teach English abroad. Others learn TESL because they want to work with English language learners in their own communities. Still others learn TESL because they are interested in linguistics or in cross-cultural communication. Regardless of the reason, learning TESL can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
How to Learn TESL
There are several ways to learn TESL. Some people choose to pursue a degree in TESL or a related field. Others choose to take TESL certification courses or workshops. Still others learn TESL through online courses or self-study. Regardless of the method you choose, there are several important things to keep in mind when learning TESL.
