History of NASA
The history of NASA can be divided into four eras:
-
The Early Years (1958-1969): This period was marked by the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. NASA's main goal during this time was to land a man on the Moon before the Soviets did.
-
The Apollo Era (1969-1972): This period saw the culmination of NASA's efforts to land a man on the Moon. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon.
-
The Space Shuttle Era (1972-2011): This period was marked by the development and use of the Space Shuttle. The Space Shuttle was a reusable spacecraft that could carry astronauts and cargo to and from orbit. The Space Shuttle was used for a variety of missions, including the construction of the International Space Station.
-
The Modern Era (2011-present): This period has seen NASA focus on a variety of new initiatives, including the development of new spacecraft, the exploration of Mars, and the search for life beyond Earth.
