2D platformers are a subgenre of platformer games that take place in a two-dimensional world. They are characterized by their side-scrolling gameplay, in which the player character moves from left to right or right to left, jumping over obstacles and enemies to reach the end of the level. 2D platformers have been around for decades, and some of the most popular examples include Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man.
