Portuguese language is a Romance language that originated in the Iberian Peninsula. It is spoken by about 250 million people worldwide, making it the sixth most spoken language in the world. Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.

History of the Portuguese Language

The Portuguese language evolved from Vulgar Latin, the spoken form of Latin that was used in the Roman Empire. Vulgar Latin was brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Roman soldiers and settlers in the 2nd century BC. Over time, Vulgar Latin developed into several different Romance languages, including Portuguese.
