Network firewalls are an essential component of any network security strategy. They act as a defensive barrier, protecting networks from unauthorized access and malicious attacks. Network firewalls can be either hardware-based (physical appliances) or software-based (virtual appliances) and are configured to allow or deny traffic based on a set of rules.
How Network Firewalls Work
Network firewalls operate on the principle of packet filtering. They examine each incoming and outgoing packet and compare it against a set of predefined rules. If the packet matches any of the rules, the firewall will take the appropriate action, such as allowing the packet to pass through, dropping the packet, or logging the packet for further analysis.
